Red light therapy for hair loss: how LED light stimulates hair growth in Amsterdam

Red light therapy for hair loss has one of the more solid evidence bases in the photobiomodulation world — including an actual FDA clearance, which is more than most light-based cosmetic claims can say.

The wavelength with the most research behind it: 655nm

655nm was FDA-cleared for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) in 2007, and it remains the most-studied wavelength for hair, largely because it's what the most widely-tested home devices (like the HairMax Lasercomb) actually use (source).

What the trials actually found

The strongest data point is a 2014 randomized, multicenter, double-blind, sham-controlled trial — the gold-standard study design — involving 128 men and 141 women. At 26 weeks, the treatment group showed a significant increase of 15.27 hairs/cm² compared to the sham (fake-device) control group (source). That's the number worth anchoring to, because it's the largest, most rigorously controlled trial in the space.

Two other frequently-cited studies show larger relative numbers but come with caveats worth naming honestly:

  • A 2014 women's RCT found a 37% increase in hair count at 16 weeks using a 655nm protocol

  • An earlier, smaller study of 35 patients using the 655nm HairMax device reported a 93.5% increase in terminal hair count versus baseline — a striking number, but from a small, earlier, device-manufacturer-adjacent trial, so it should be read as promising rather than definitive on its own

A systematic review and meta-analysis of FDA-approved, home-use, low-level light devices for pattern hair loss, published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, backs the general direction of these findings across multiple trials rather than relying on any single study (source).

How deep does the light actually need to go?

Hair follicles sit at varying depths depending on hair type and scalp anatomy, but generally in the mid-dermis. Red light in the 630–660nm range penetrates roughly 1–4mm into tissue, reaching the dermis and the blood vessels that feed the follicle — which lines up with why this wavelength range, rather than something much deeper-penetrating, is what the hair-loss trials converged on (source).

What this means for realistic expectations

Based on the trial timelines above:

  • Meaningful trial results were measured at 16–26 weeks, not weeks 1–4 — this is not a fast intervention

  • The best-controlled trial (sham-controlled, 269 participants) still measured a modest per-cm² increase, not a full head of new hair

  • Results are most consistent as prevention and early-stage treatment, which tracks with how photobiomodulation is understood to work — supporting follicles that are still active rather than reviving ones that have fully miniaturized

What we'd tell you honestly

Red light therapy for hair is one of the better-evidenced applications of photobiomodulation, with an actual FDA clearance and a real sham-controlled trial behind it — that's not true of every claim made about red light. But it's a slow, cumulative intervention best judged at the 4–6 month mark, not the 4-week mark, and it works best on hair that's thinning rather than gone.
